Save Maju Forest. Clementi’s 23-hectare secondary woodland holds 286 plants, 113 animals, a rare stream, pangolins and critically endangered straw-headed bulbuls. Linked to the Rail Corridor, it stores carbon. Parks cannot replace it. Homes can be rebuilt; this forest cannot. Build on brownfield. From Pritam Singh of Mountain Adventure Travels Singapore.

Save Maju Forest

Maju Forest is a living 23-hectare secondary forest in Clementi. Save its stream, canopy, pangolins, and straw-headed bulbuls. Homes matter. So does the last wild neighbour we still have.

1. Homes we can rebuild. Forests we cannot.

2. Maju is not empty land. It is full of life.

3. 23 hectares. 286 plants. 113 animals. One chance.

4. The straw-headed bulbul still sings here. Will our grandchildren hear it?

5. Build on brownfield. Leave the greenfield green

.6. A forest is cheaper climate defence than another seawall.

7. Pangolins do not live in parks. They live in forests like Maju.

8. Singapore is a City in Nature — until we cut the nature.

9. You cannot replant a 50-year-old canopy overnight.

10. The stream in Maju is rarer than another block of flats.

11. Wildlife corridors only work if they stay connected.

12. Cool streets. Clean air. Quiet birdsong. That is Maju.

13. We do not inherit the forest from our parents. We borrow it from our children.

14. hectares gone is not “a little greenery.” It is a whole world.

15. If one-third of the world’s remaining straw-headed bulbuls live here, this is not a local issue.

16. Concrete heats. Forests cool. Choose wisely.

17. Seniors walk here. Children discover here. Animals survive here.

18. Existence value: some places matter even if you never hike them.

19. Stop spending land Singapore can never get back.20. A petition is a prayer with a signature.

21. The Rail Corridor was saved. Maju can be too.

22. Housing is a need. Erasing a living forest is a choice.

23. Look up from the map. The trees are still breathing.

24. Critically endangered does not mean “already gone.” It means “still here — for now.”

25. Maju Forest: not a vacant lot. A neighbour.

26. Floods rise when canopies fall.

27. You can densify old estates. You cannot densify a pangolin.

28. Brownfield first. Greenfield last. Always.

29. The most expensive land in Singapore is the land we never get back.

30. Walk it once before it becomes a memory.

31. Nature is not the leftover after planning. Nature is the plan.

32. A million planted trees is good. An existing forest is better.

33. Listen: that is not traffic. That is a forest

34. Save Maju. Save the stream. Save the song.

35. Development without a living forest is just more heat.

36. Clementi’s last wild heart is beating. Don’t stop it.

37. If we can send rockets to space, we can house people without flattening a forest.

38. The City in Nature dies one “small patch” at a time.

39. Sign. Share. Walk. Speak. The trees cannot.

40. Save Maju Forest — by Mountain Adventure Travels, Pritam Singh.*Biodiversity and ecosystem:*Maju Forest is a 23-hectare mature secondary forest between Sunset Way, Clementi Road and Brookvale Drive.

It is not a gazetted nature reserve, yet decades of quiet regeneration have made it one of western Singapore’s richest leftover habitats. Government studies recorded about 286 plant species and 113 animal species. A natural freshwater stream still runs through it — increasingly rare on this island. The forest sits beside the Rail Corridor and Clementi Forest. Together they form a living corridor so shy animals can move instead of dying in isolated green scraps.

That is why cutting two-thirds of the canopy is not “losing some trees.” It is breaking a chain. Among the fauna of conservation concern are the critically endangered straw-headed bulbul (a large share of the world’s remaining birds live in Singapore’s fragments), the Sunda pangolin (the most trafficked mammal on Earth), the buffy fish-owl, changeable hawk-eagle, oriental magpie-robin, bamboo bat and long-tailed macaque. The stream holds freshwater crabs, frogs and aquatic insects. On the floor and in the understorey: fungi, ferns, native shrubs and the layered canopy that cools streets, stores carbon and slows storm runoff. A planted park cannot replace this.

Young landscaping does not give pangolins leaf litter, bulbuls a song-post, or a neighbourhood its dawn chorus. Maju is small on a map and enormous in an ecosystem. Keep the stream. Keep the corridor. Keep the forest that already works.
